Do Taste Buds Really Change?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UWindsor chapter.

Growing up there used to be so many foods that I absolutely HATED, but now I love so much. I used to hate cheese, pizza, olives, fish and sushi. What’s ironic now is that those foods are some of my favorites.

Of course, there are still foods that I just cannot digest, and I’ll tell you about how I got over my hate for these foods.

As a kid, at every single birthday party, there was always pizza. I couldn’t stand the sight of cheese and its texture, so I always ordered something else and ate on my own. This hate for pizza went on my entire life until I was 19 years old. I started working at a pub downtown and its main attraction was pizza! I was working long shifts 6 days out of the week, with not many other options for food. So, I started eating it pretty often. By no means do I suggest eating pizza every day either! But with these circumstances, I learned to love it, and even crave it at times.

Next, sushi can be a really big hit or miss. From my experiences and the people I’ve been around, I found that people either absolutely fantasize about sushi or get sick at the thought of it. When I was younger, like most kids, I thought eating raw fish, rice, and vegetables were probably one of the worst combinations ever. I grew up in a household that never ate it nor even talked about it. But, when I went to high school, I made a friend whose family went to Niko’s sushi regularly. They offered to take me after school one day and I started off slow with a California roll. I loved it! This completely changed my whole thoughts on sushi. It has grown to become one of my favorite foods ever, and is now a weekly occurrence to get it every Sunday.

Finally, one thing I could not stand was the smell, taste, and even the appearance of olives. If I’m being honest, I hated them up until 2 weeks ago. I felt like they were so overpowering and so bitter that they just completely took over the taste of anything they were topped on. I was out a couple of weeks ago with my friends, and they ordered olives as an appetizer. I was STARVING and caved into trying one. Before this, I had not tried one in years, so I was extremely skeptical. I took a little nibble, and didn’t mind it at all. In fact, I loved it! Since that moment I’ve been eating olives out of the jar.

So, speaking from experience, yes, our taste buds do change. I wanted to share this because no one should be scared to try new foods. As we grow up, we change in all sorts of different ways. Next time you have the opportunity to try something you think you don’t like, give it another shot!
