Style has always been something I’ve held dear to me. I love finding new creative ways to express myself, and clothing and fashion has become one of my favorites. Though I’ve always been interested in it, I never fully understood my own personal style. When I was younger, I would copy all of my favorite celebrities and influencers, wearing clothes that didn’t flatter me or reflect my own intricate personality. Here are a few tips I’ve learned throughout my journey with discovering a personal style.
The first and most important aspect of figuring out your style is always going to be a focus on your own comfort. Comfort levels vary from person to person, and there is no right or wrong level. I tend to experiment with my outfits and will try many types of clothing, though I avoid certain clothing pieces, like tight dresses or flat shoes, as it can make me feel mentally and physically uncomfortable. However, I also tend to wear clothing that takes more focus and effort, like short dresses and bell sleeves.
Trends can be fun to observe, but it can take away from what you are trying to portray about yourself through your outfits! If you only follow trends, you are harping and stunting your own style from breaking through! Instead of blatantly following the crowd, try to take note of what aspects of the trend you like! For me, the bow pattern was trending, I felt myself drawn to it. However, I didn’t shove bows on every skirt, jean, or sweater, but rather I realized I love clothes with a feminine touch! I discovered something I like through its popularity while also tuning it to myself and my interests.
Next is to accessorize! Jewelry, bags, and shoes can be all that you need to take a basic or simple outfit to the next level! After building a wardrobe of good staples, try to find some statement pieces that match your aesthetic! I love to find fun earrings at farmers markets and to wear big chunky sunglasses during summertime. If an outfit doesn’t feel like it’s working, there’s a chance that you just haven’t paired it with the right assets. Thrifting vintage accessories is a great way to try something new and fun while not breaking the bank
The most important part about style is to have fun! For years I have personally played it safe, wearing simple graphic tees with jeans and staying away from the stress of accessorizing. However, I’ve realized that my clothing choices don’t have to just reflect my serious side in order to be perceived the way I prefer. Instead, I can use clothing as a way to have fun and try new creative outlets. Having fun could mean wearing a ton of color or trying interesting silhouettes. I love to hide my figure and wear large oversized baby doll dresses rather than trying to highlight my attributes. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just something that makes you feel like yourself.
