The Hottest Exercise Spots in South County

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

Now that you’ve treated yourself to new gym clothes from the sweet companies I shared in my last article, it’s time to break them in!

I know the gym can be kind of a drag. Sometimes it’s hard work to simply show up after a long day of sitting through classes.

To help you out I’ve found some pretty cool, non-gym spots where you can get your daily workout in. They all offer fun environments and unique ways to burn some major calories. All of these spots are less than 20 minutes from URI so you have no excuse to try them all out and see which ones you like best!

1. Rock Spot Climbing

Rock climbing is super fun and a great work out. It not only builds muscle and endurance, but it also boosts brain function and decreases stress levels. Rock Spot Climbing is an indoor climbing gym that offers daily passes for students starting at just $20, gear included! They also offer memberships and training sessions for the newbies out there.

2. Rhode Island Yoga Center

If you’re like me and enjoy mental and physical exercise, then you have to check out RI Yoga Center. Conveniently located in the URI Kingston Emporium, the studio offers classes for all levels of yogis. Some of the more popular classes include basic vinyasa, hot power yoga, yoga tone and BUTI yoga.

And guess what?!

Besides offering student discounts and having the *coolest* backdrops for Insta pics, they even hold $5 classes every Friday. Drop in one day after class…but be sure to bring your own mat!

3. Pilates West Bay

If you’re the type of person who is up for a challenge then I recommend giving Pilates West Bay a try. The studio in East Greenwich offers multiple rigorous classes such as: pilates, gyrotonic, barre, corefit roller and functional fitness. They have a great trial offer that is $30 for two weeks of unlimited group classes! Learn more about the unique classes West Bay has to offer here.

4. The Beach

It may sound like common sense, but a run or fast walk on the beach is fantastic exercise! Running on the sand gives your joints a break and triggers muscles in your knees, ankles and feet which helps prevent against injuries while running on the roads or treadmill. It also burns 30% more calories!

Physical benefits aside, running along the beautiful beaches of Rhode Island really helps to clear your mind of anything that may be causing you stress. It is a little chilly out there, so bundle up or save this option for when the air gets a tad warmer.
