How Being in Nature Has Helped Me With My Mental Health

Stepping out of our routines as college students can be tough, but taking care of ourselves should always be a priority. More often than not, college life is stressful and taking a breather once in a while might seem impossible. And, if we do take that most needed break it usually involves some kind of electronic device. Personally, technology takes most of my time. I’ve found it difficult to completely detach myself from it, regardless of being the source of most of my problems. Problems like procrastination are the result of my mindlessly scrolling through social media for hours or watching YouTube videos. But, when I find myself in a very tough situation, I try to look for solutions outside of my phone.

And so to counter the technology habit, I’ve been trying something different: immersing myself in nature when times get rough. Everybody’s story is different, but for me, nature has helped me and my health in many ways and it might just aid your needs as well.

Reflection

Spending time with yourself can be beneficial for you. Being alone once in a while can actually help you develop a better understanding of who you are. Being with one’s thoughts can be intimidating, but that’s where you get to know yourself better. Sometimes, I need to make an important decision and the sound of the breeze and the leaves makes me think clearer. So, think about joining the wind under a tree when you have a lot going on in your head.

Be in the moment

Anxiety always seems to make a visit during my day, but when I decide to go outside, I end up feeling lighter. For example, sometimes I walk around campus staring at the trees, leaves, and the bees I find on my way and it keeps me grounded.

When life gets too hectic, nature is always there for you. Taking a walk while listening to music or even a trip to the beach seems to help me relax, and it might do wonders to you too.

Inspiration

When I’m in a slump, being surrounded by nature always helps me find inspiration. It makes me feel connected, like Muses whispering in my ears. We’re surrounded by a beauty that we often take for granted; just because it’s mundane it doesn’t mean it’s worthless. Rainbows appear all time, and for some of us, that doesn’t mean we don’t stop to admire them.

Next time you’re out and about, close your eyes and take a deep breath, let the wind caress you. Nature continues to help me relax, to reflect, to be mindful, and to fuel my creativity. Technology may claim that it knows everything, but I found that some answers are not found on a Google search, but rather waiting under the shade of a tree.
