Your First Trip to the Gynecologist

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNT chapter.

For those of you who have never been to the gynecologist before, you may have imagined the cold fingers of a doctor poking and prodding at your privates followed by the awkward questions about your sex life. If not, I definitely have. However, after my first visit, I can assure you that the trip is much less painful then you may think.

The Doctors Are Very Friendly

They are medical professionals who have seen everything; there’s nothing they can’t handle. Don’t be afraid to talk to them about any concerns you may have, they’re here to help.

You Do Have to Get Undressed

You are required to get undress completely which can be uncomfortable for some. However, you do get cover-ups to wear and they will let you keep your socks on if you’re cold

Yes, They Do Have to Touch You, But Only Briefly

They will feel your breasts to check for any abnormalities such as lumps, and they will check down below to see if you look healthy. If this is your first visit, they won’t go in deep unless you have a legitimate concern.

Ask Questions

It’s perfectly normal if you’re considering starting birth control methods or have other questions about contraceptives. Or if you have other concerns, please vocalize them

See if You Can Get Blood Work Done

Hormone imbalances are very common, so getting your blood tested as well can help determine if you should start birth control to regulate yourself. And if you are sexually active and don’t use protection, you can always get a checkup.

You May Have to Get a Sonogram

Sonograms, while commonly used on pregnant women, can be used to check the uterus and ovaries for any irregularities. If you don’t bleed on a regular basis, you may want to get a sonogram to check for any cysts.

In conclusion, going to the gynecologist is a regular part of a woman’s life. It may seem strange at first, but you will come to realize that they’re only for our benefit.
