Why I’ve Made Going to the Gym a Priority in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

1. Working Out is the Best Stress Reliever

With all of the studying, working, and feasting, hitting the gym is the perfect way to blow off some steam. A quick workout class in between lectures can be the perfect solution to a stressful day.

2. We’ve All Heard the Freshman Fifteen Stories…

Let’s face it: You’re staying up late doing homework, hitting Philly’s late-night three times a week, stopping by DHOP on your way home from a fun Friday night out and repeating it all over again the next week. Sometimes it feels like you’re just too busy to take care of your body. But when you go home over Christmas break and your clothes are just a liiittle tighter than normal, you’ll suddenly have your New Year’s Resolution locked in. Be proactive and try to work out a couple days a week – even if you just go for a walk, or workout in your lounge for 30 minutes.

3. A Set Routine Can Help You Stay On Track

In high school, I was used to a very concrete schedule and being told where to be and when. Often times, students used to that same structure go to college and struggle to balance this newfound freedom and maintain grades. By having a semi-fixed schedule every day and blocking off time to study, eat, workout etc., you can help your mind stay on track.

4. Help Regulate Your Sleep Schedule

College students are notorious for having the worst sleep schedules. Between staying up until 2 am studying, getting up early for your 8 am and fitting in a nap around 4 to reboot, sometimes when you go to lay down at night to get some sleep, you just…can’t. By finding a time to work out during the day, you can guarantee to get a good night sleep.

5. Boost Your Energy

Sometimes when you’re exhausted from a fun weekend or long night of studying, the last thing that sounds like a good idea is working out. However, once you push yourself to finish a workout, you’ll feel a whole new burst of energy to help you focus and be productive for the rest of the day.
