How to Stay Healthy Throughout the Holidays

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Over eating seems like the biggest struggle for people trying to live a healthy lifestyle. The dreaded holiday season is the best and worst time of year. Friends and families getting together to celebrate and the tables full of food can seem daunting but it doesn’t have to be that way. I’m here to share some tips and tricks to help you continue to stay healthy during the holiday season.

    1. Stay Active

If you are able to, go to a gym. Wake up a little earlier than normal and bang out a quick hour workout at the gym. That way you get your day started early on the right foot.  If you don’t have access to a gym any type of physical activity is better than nothing. Head outside and play football with your family, go on a hike, you can even look up at-home workouts on YouTube that are quick and effective.

2. Pace Yourself

The first thing that comes to mind when I think about the holiday season is food. No one wants to miss out on the holiday specials and you don’t have to. It’s all about moderation and keeping an equal balance. If you want to try a lot of desserts you can take a smaller portion of each or instead share with a relative. That way you can still enjoy everything without over eating and making yourself feel sick (this can be used for every portion of meals).

   3. Don’t Get Down on Yourself To go along with both tips, one day of bad eating will not make you unhealthy, just like one day of really good eating won’t make you healthy. Enjoy your holidays try and make a healthy version of your favorite holiday dish you will enjoy it and who knows maybe everyone else will as well.
