Handling a stressful week of college

This past weekend I went home for the first time this semester to unwind and spend quality time with my family. I didn’t look at Canvas once and now I’m paying the price. I had three full days of relaxation, but now I am facing one of the most stressful weeks this year.

As a junior in college, I have struggled through countless weeks of exams, papers and projects and survived, so I thought I would offer my advice on how to manage a particularly stressful week.

First and foremost, I make a to-do list for the week and include everything. I mean everything. I start with school assignments, quizzes, exams and meetings, then add necessary chores and errands like laundry and grocery shopping. Next, add I the things I want to do; my list this week included doing my nails, making a Target run, and going out to dinner for my friend’s birthday.

Once I have my list, I put the items into a calendar. I use Google Calendar religiously to schedule out every event for every day of my life. I have my weekly schedule for the semester then add in specific events each week. I even block out breaks on especially busy weeks like this one. Having a visual schedule for my week lets me know that I really do have time to get everything done.

My most important tip is to have something to look forward to each day even if it’s small. This could be something like getting coffee during my busiest class day, watching my favorite show after I finish an assignment, calling a friend or family member, or making fun plans for the weekend.

Keep reminding yourself that you will get through the week and there are still positive things to look forward to! If you are really struggling with school, talk to your professors. I was surprised by how understandable most of them are and that they are willing to work with you to help you succeed.

Good luck with your week; you got this!
