5 Easy Ways to Show Yourself Some Love During Midterms

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCW chapter.

As September comes to a close, the semester approaches the halfway point, and we all know what that means: the dreaded midterm season has arrived.

This is one of the busiest times of the year for us college students, and if you’re anything like me, it can be hard to save any time or energy for yourself. But, during stressful seasons like midterms, it’s more important than ever to take a moment every day to check in on YOU. Here are 5 quick and easy ways to show yourself some much needed TLC.

Soak Up the Sun

Hiding out in the stacks at the library might make you feel more studious, but it definitely doesn’t help with stress. During your study break, take a quick walk outside instead of scrolling through your Twitter feed. Even a five-minute burst of vitamin D can do wonders for your mood!

Meditate

You don’t have to attend a class or find a special space. Just put in some headphones wherever you are, close your eyes, and focus on your breath for a few minutes. Clearing your mind of stress will relieve some tension, and, as a peaceful reminder to live in the present, might improve your focus! If you’re new to meditation, or having trouble getting zen, there are tons of quick guided meditations out there for anyone from beginners to experts.

Journal

Even if you don’t keep a journal regularly, it can be a helpful practice during times of stress. Write down your frustrations like you’re venting to a friend. Then, try making a list of all the things you’re thankful for, or all the things you’re excited about in the near future. Even if it seems silly while you’re doing it, you may find it lifts your spirits more than you expected.

Do One Thing Just Because You Want To

With so many obligations, it can seem impossible to achieve all of your personal goals. But the least you can do is take a few minutes to do one thing that you want to do every day. If you have some extra time, go visit that new coffee shop you’ve been wanting to try, or go home and cross some chores off your to-do list. If you’re in a time crunch, pick an interesting podcast to listen to on your way to class, or pause your study session to watch a video that always makes you laugh.

Dress for Success

Yeah, I know, this one seems corny, but just hear me out. Usually, at least for me, midterm season=sitting at PCJ in my sweats until closing time. But, if you find yourself in a funk, it might be time to break out an outfit that boosts your confidence. Put on the clothes that make you feel like your best self, and you might find it a little easier to conquer that research paper!

Even with all these tips, this time of year can be stressful. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your friends for support, and remember – Insomnia Cookies delivers until 3 a.m.
