One of the more recent beauty trends has been to start incorporating a facial toner into your skin routine. Many dermatologists recommend it, especially if your skin is acne prone or just oily in general.  It may just be the one product that’s standing between you and having clear skin. But what exactly is a toner?

A toner can help reduce the size of pores.

If you struggle with large pores, a toner might be the simplest solution! Applying toner on a cotton pad after washing your face in the mornings or evenings can help to remove that last bit of dirt and grime that may be clogging up your pores. Doing this will allow your pores to return to their normal size since they aren’t filled with gunk anymore.

A toner can help restore your skin’s natural pH.

It’s strange to think that your skin has a natural acidity to it, but this helps maintain the natural oils that your skin produces. Our faces tend to be slightly on the acidic side, but since our soaps and face washes we use tend to be a little basic, this can cause your skin’s pH to become imbalanced. This means your skin is going to overproduce oil; however, you can help prevent this by applying a toner in order to bring the natural pH back without having to worry about oily skin.

A toner can act to help keep your skin fresh and moisturized.

A toner can act as a humectant, which means that it can help keep moisture on your skin by binding to it, helping the skin absorb it faster and reducing the oiliness. Many toners also contain amino acids that can help to nourish and hydrate your skin to keep it looking young.

Your toner should be applied right after you wash your face in order to remove any debris that may not have been removed during the wash. Some people like to spray their face and then rub it in with their hands, but I personally prefer to use a cotton pad in order to avoid touching my face with my hands. One thing to keep in mind, however, is to make sure that one of the ingredients in your toner is NOT alcohol, since this can make your skin more prone to dryness.

All in all, a toner has many benefits for your skin. If you don’t already use one daily, you should strongly consider starting to incorporate it into your skincare routine. Finding the right one for you may be difficult and require some trial and error, but I promise you that when you find the right one, you’ll be asking yourself why you had waited so long to try out a toner.
