Things to Remember this Holiday Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.

It is common and often out of our control to experience some stress during the holidays. Whether it is the pre-finals workload, spending time with loved ones or finding gifts; the holidays are a busy time. Here are some things I focus on that have helped me work through the hectic occasion.

Hardwork pays off

This one is for those who feel like this semester is never-ending or that feel like they are not being rewarded for all the hard work they put in. That feeling will soon pass as Christmas time sets in. The holiday spirit and the quality time spent with family and friends will be here before you know it. Stay motivated, you are doing great!

Planning is crucial

Plan when you will get things done. Plan when you will see your friends. Plan when you will spend time with your family. Plan all the gifts you have to purchase for each member of your family and each close friend of yours. The years when I was still frantically Christmas shopping the day before Christmas Eve were undoubtedly the more stressful years. It all worked itself out in the end of course, but I did feel rushed when picking out gifts for my family. Every year after my stressful gift procrastination, I have always made lists to brainstorm and keep track of what gifts to get everybody. Organizing my thoughts and ideas on my phone or on paper has helped me keep track of everybody and avoid last-minute store runs.

Family is Forever

Spending time with loved ones is precious. Being able to spend time with your family after spending a substantial amount of time apart is special. A supporting family lasts forever and catching up with them is priceless. Bonding with the loved ones you have always shared life with is something that cannot be replaced in my own life.

The Joy of Giving

I find myself stressed about finding the money and time to find the perfect gift for my family members and friends. The amazing thing about gift giving though is that it does not have to be perfect. Put some genuine thought into what you are purchasing for someone. Think about their interests, hobbies and similarities you two might share. Shopping for someone else should be fun and exciting. Chances are your loved ones will appreciate whatever you buy for them because they love you.

Yourself!

Take the time to focus on yourself during finals cramming and especially after. Maintain a healthy diet, sleep schedule and exercise routine to keep your mental and physical being in good condition. After all the holiday chaos, take some time to relax and rejuvenate before next semester. Reflect on the hard work you have accomplished and your future goals. Maybe use this time to make some New Year resolutions as well.

Keeping these points in mind throughout the cold winter months can ease your mind and make for a more enjoyable holiday season!
