Why Healing Takes Time

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

There are a lot of things that happen to us in our lives whether it is good or bad. The bad parts of our lives, at some point, required us to heal. When I say healing, I don’t mean the physical kind of healing. It’s not that physical healing isn’t important because we’ve all broken or sprained some part of our body, or even gone through surgery, or even gotten our wisdom teeth out. Wisdom teeth healing is awful and a pain in the butt because being limited to jello and pudding sucks. It doesn’t, however, compare to mental/emotional healing.

Emotional/mental healing is something that’s not often discussed. It takes time to heal mentally and emotionally. It doesn’t happen in an instance though many of us, including myself, wish it did. We’ve all had things happen that required us to heal mentally and emotionally. It could be that we lost a loved one, went through something traumatic like a car accident, or went through an intense breakup. The list goes on for the various things that could have happened. Healing varies for each person. For some people, it could take a week, and for others, it could take years. No one said that healing would be easy, though for some it may be easy if they have a shorter healing period. Healing, as I said before, varies for each person, since healing periods and techniques vary for each individual. No one is going to heal the same way since we aren’t the same.

I’m in the process of healing, and I know my healing techniques aren’t going to be the same as my friend or a random person who might be healing as well. Music, for me, is calming and has helped me heal since I’m able to express myself. I found, through my healing, that reaching out to someone to just talk about things helps. I’ve reached out to many of my friends when I just needed to vent, needed someone to listen, or just go out with me and keep me company. If you find ways to help yourself heal, then it’ll make the journey a bit easier. I started going to the gym again and updated my wardrobe a bit as well. You have to find what works for you and what is going to help you through your healing journey. Honestly, it’s the little things that can help us heal and just change our attitude. Mental health and self care are truly important aspects of the healing process. You have to be able to take time for yourself, and sometimes be a bit selfish if you need to because your mental health is truly important. Healing isn’t easy, but sometimes through healing you learn things and become stronger.
