Things That Totally Aren’t Weird to Do Alone

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

As a young woman, it’s not uncommon to feel super weird about going places alone, especially when you’re so used to going everywhere with your entourage of girlfriends — even the bathroom. We all do it; I’m not writing this article as some superior being that can go everywhere alone. The point is to break this stereotype that we have placed ourselves in, and to encourange us to branch out to be the strong, independent women we know we all are deep down. It certainly helps to start somewhere though, so here’s a list of things you can do alone without feeling totally weird.

1. Up in the gym, just workin’ on your fitnessThe reference was extremely lame, but the point is this: You can go work out and be healthy on your own. My favorite part about the gym is that no one is watching what you’re doing and how you’re doing it. You can use any machine you want to, and you don’t have to worry about coordinating two open ones to accommodate for a friend. Of course, working out with a gym buddy is motivating, but sometimes we just need to zone out and release some endorphins on our own.

2. Shop ‘til you dropShopping is another amazing example of an activity I used to think was impossible to do alone,  but now I do it all the time. Shopping alone is a great opportunity to find your own style without worrying about what others will potentially say. Plus, if you’re feeling really unsure about a possible purchase, sending a picture in your group chat is an easy fix.

3. Coffee break!Grabbing a coffee and zoning out on my laptop was probably one of my favorite things to do this summer. It allows you to get away from some things, while also feeling productive because you have a coffee in hand. This is so much better than going to the library and just procrastinating because you have a zen environment and yummy coffee to enjoy. There are so many amazing places all over Gainesville that have great coffee and great vibes.

4. Branch out to new organizationsLast, but certainly not least, going to new club and organization meetings alone is something that used to be foreign to me. I feel as though we all rely on our closest friends to love what we love, and the beautiful thing about UF is that everyone has a different passion. Going to club and organization meetings allows you to find your own niche and make new friends. Sitting down alone in a room is kind of awkward at first, but eventually you’ll feel you are right where you should be.

Doing things alone is an amazing opportunity to find yourself and show off how independent you really are. You, my fellow collegiates, are all extraordinary and strong women, and you can do anything you set your mind to.
