Sometimes Granola, Always a Go-Getter: UF’s Rachel Ram

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Name: Rachel Ram

Major: Health Education and Behavior

Hometown: Palm City, FL

Rachel Ram is a go-getter, who is sometimes described as “granola.” She is not afraid to speak up, act up and embarrass herself. Campus Juice, a club created to promote a healthy lifestyle at UF through volunteering and social activities, encompasses her love for health, the environment and human rights all in one.

Her Campus: How exactly does Campus Juice promote a healthy lifestyle and how did you get involved?

Rachel Ram: “[We] promote a healthy lifestyle [by having], potluck dinners, nature hikes and yoga classes. It was formed in 2013 and was originally just a social group of people who wanted to juice together. Now it has expanded to meet the many dimensions of health through both a social and philanthropic lens. I became a member my freshman year in 2014 and decided to take on a leadership role. Then, before I knew it, I was offered the presidency position from the former president/founder!”

HC: What are some of the health benefits to juicing?

RR: “The health benefits of juicing include better nutrient absorption, a break for your digestive system from working on fiber, reducing your risk of cancer, boosting your immune system, helping remove toxins from your body, aiding digestion and helping you lose weight. It is a great way to incorporate a higher quantity of fruits and veggies into your diet. It is important to use enough vegetables in a juice so the sugar level is not too high. You should also choose organic produce whenever possible.

HC: How can juicing impact one’s college lifestyle?

RR: “It can impact one’s college lifestyle by providing natural energy, improved cognitive function, increased physical ability, improved mood and an overall feeling of well-being, which is important during this stressful time of our lives. Eating well in general is worth every penny and time spent preparing; just give it a try and you’ll see.”

HC: The club also coordinates hikes, yoga and DIY classes for the members, how do these tie into the overall goal of the club?

RR: “These tie into the overall goal of the club by providing students with both the resources and a community to achieve a balanced, healthy lifestyle. Health isn’t just a physical state of well-being; it’s also social, emotional, environmental as well as other factors, so we strive to provide a range of activities that meet all of these dimensions.”

HC: Why do you think living a more “green” lifestyle with wholesome foods is important?

RR: “A ‘green’ lifestyle is important for so many reasons. It ensures an improved quality of life for individuals. A healthy lifestyle makes us feel better today and hopefully will extend our lives in the future. Also, it’s more beneficial for the planet, which is greatly affected by human choices. Since eating is something we all must engage in, our sustainable and healthy food choices have a crucial effect on the planet.”

HC: How can people learn more about the food industry in an informative way?

RR: “ Do research, take classes, read books, join organizations that promote healthy living and make responsible food choices. Florida Food Policy Council is an excellent organization to learn more about food politics.

HC: Do have any advice for students who might be afraid to go after something they secretly have a passion for?

RR: “Just do it! Life is short, and we can’t waste time being afraid. Follow your dreams, and you’ll be amazed how beautiful life is.”
