Need Sneakers That Won’t Run Through Your Budget? Try Ryka

I’m what you would call an “aggressive walker.” I fit the bill of the stereotypical New Yorker who walks everywhere, and fast. A few weeks ago, I accidentally walked three miles during my lunch break.

But most of the time, I end up destroying my shoes. Even if they don’t look like they’re on their last legs, I could assemble a graveyard of sneakers that simply lost all support. Though I might be a bit extra sensitive as an ex-dancer, it was killing my knees and joints when I’d go out for anything more than my daily work commute.

When the time came to buy a new pair of sneakers, I dreaded the process even more than shopping for a swimsuit. I needed a supportive pair that could keep up with my lifestyle, but I wasn’t thrilled about shelling out nearly $150 (or more) on prestige brand footwear, knowing they too would be destroyed in no time.

As I wandered the sneaker aisles at my local DSW, hoping to find a new direction of search, if not a new pair of shoes, one pair caught my eye. It was simple, black with pink accents and the price tag was shockingly affordable. I tried on a pair in my usual size, and after taking a few steps, I realized I had put on the most comfortable sneakers I’ve ever tried. So, I was the proud owner of a brand new pair of Ryka Sky Strides.

One of Ryka’s most distinguishing factors is its design by women, for women. Initially, I thought this would just be a marketing gimmick. How could a pair of sneakers really be that different? But after walking for a bit, I could feel my ankles and knees in better alignment, thanks to my shoes being more supportive in all the right places. Another element I loved was the material makeup. The pair I purchased wasn’t all leather, staying breathable, but it wasn’t the thin mesh that is typically standard to sneakers either, so it wouldn’t easily get holes.

On one of my first outings in my new Ryka’s, I accidentally walked 10 miles throughout Manhattan (it was a nice day and I just kept exploring, ok?). Typically, my legs would be exhausted by the end of the day, but I still had energy and a bounce in my step walking back to the train at the end of the night. Even better, I didn’t wake up with any pain or soreness!

I’ve since purchased a few more pairs of Ryka’s (on sale, too!) and they’ve become my go-to sneakers. I’ve seen some sandals, Mary Janes and other styles online that I’d love to try.

Want to add a pair to your rotation? Ryka is available online and through retailers like Famous Footwear, DSW, Target, Nordstrom, Dillard’s, Shoe Carnival and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
