4 Things That Could be Ruining Your Self-Esteem

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Low self-esteem is an epidemic among our culture’s women. It starts early on and is a hard thing to beat. Pop culture and Photoshop make it easy to feel uncomfortable in your own skin. Luckily, it’s possible to take charge by kicking one unhealthy habit at a time. If any of these statements apply to you, it may be time to change your ways for the sake of gaining a little self-confidence and learning to love yourself just the way you are.

1. You are your own worse critic.

Give yourself a break! If you wouldn’t say it to another person, why would you say it to yourself? You deserve better than that. People make mistakes; there is no use being harder on yourself than others are.

2. You are a complete perfectionist.

In the words of Miley Cyrus, no one is perfect. Repeat that a few times: No one. Is. Perfect. And you know what? That’s okay! If you strive to be perfect, you are setting yourself up for disaster. Allow yourself to be imperfect because your faults are what make you beautiful and unique!

3. You compare yourself to others too much.

You can never be anyone but you. Those other girls on campus and social media have their own set of flaws and problems, too. Strive to be your best self, not a version of someone else.

4. You focus on your flaws more than your positives.

Alright, so there are some things you don’t like about yourself. That’s fine, but what about the things you do like? It can be easy to look in the mirror and focus on the negatives. Instead, take a deep breath and remind yourself of all the beautiful features, too.

Hopefully these four things will help you gain back your confidence. Stay positive and stay happy because your sense of self-worth is too important to ignore.
