Girls Just Wanna…Feel Comfortable in the Gym

Over summer I started going to the gym and it has now been a little over two months since the beginning of my fitness journey. I will be the first to admit that the gym is intimidating for beginners, especially at a college gym. College gyms seem to be overrun by men who take up all the mirror space, dumbbells,  and bench presses. It is so easy to feel lost and maybe a bit defeated while entering the gym. No one deserves to feel that way while attempting to strengthen and better themself.  From a girl who started off with no knowledge of weights, I now guide my friends through their workouts– here are some tips to feel more confident and comfortable so that you can conquer the gym!

You deserve the space you are taking up.

I wanted to start off by saying that you have every right to be there as everyone else. Just because you are a beginner does not mean you need to workout to the side. If you want to be near a mirror, walk up to it. If you want to rest a bit between sets, rest! Never feel that you need to rush your workouts or relocate for those who appear more experienced.

Have a plan before you enter the gym.

For me, this is one of the most important parts of my workout. I like to research workouts the night before I go to the gym. Ask your friends for advice, look up articles, and watch Youtube videos. After I find workouts I like, I type them into my notes so that I can have it with me while I workout. It is both satisfying to cross off the workouts and can give you a sense of comfort to know that everything you are doing is already figured out.

Go with friends.

I think it is definitely easier to start off going to the gym with a friend. For the first month or so, I always went with a partner. This really helped me build confidence and get a feel for the gym alongside someone else. Now I am able to go alone with that same level of confidence.

Don’t be afraid to speak up.

Even with your plan, it is likely that you will have times where the machine or equipment you want to use is taken. This always makes for an awkward situation where you may feel lost and unsure what to do next. Don’t be afraid to communicate with the people who are using what you need. Ask how much more time they have left. If they say they are just starting, ask them to go next. They may even ask to cycle you in and switch off during your sets. No matter what,  your communication will get you a spot sooner than just standing around waiting. If it will be awhile, try to do another part of your workout nearby so that you can get the machine or equipment as soon as they are done. I have only had positive experiences by asking.

Create a workout playlist.

For many people, music is an instant source of comfort. Playing your favorite hype songs will definitely help motivate you and give you reassurance in this new environment.

Wear something you are comfortable in.

On Instagram, I always see girls that workout in cute matching sets with biker shorts and a sports bra. By all means, if you are comfortable in this, go for it! Personally, I am not willing to wear just a sports bra while lifting weights. I opt for an oversized tee and biker shorts or leggings. Find what feels best for you.

Listen to your body.

By doing new workouts, it is inevitable that you will not have perfect form. If you ever feel pain or discomfort, stop and try to figure out what is going wrong. I usually pull up Youtube and watch a video on how to properly perform the exercise I am doing. Don’t ignore pain and remember to take breaks–drink water, stretch, if you are ever feeling overwhelmed or unable to complete your sets.

Try different workouts till you find what you like best.

I have gone through many workouts in order to create the routines I like. Don’t be afraid to switch the movements you are doing, the amount of reps, and the weight you are using. Creating a routine is all about trial and error but once you find what you like, it will feel like second nature to get through your workouts.

If you are thinking about starting the gym, or have been going and not feeling it, I hope that these tips will help you achieve your goals and remind you that you are not alone. It is natural to feel intimidated but you will grow and overcome the initial discomfort in exchange for new strength and dedication to yourself. Go out and show those men who do too many chest days that you belong at the gym!
