Why You Should Participate in Dance Marathon 2018

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

Are you a competitive person? A party girl? Friends of a philanthropist, or an aspiring one yourself? If so, then February 10th is your lucky day.

Dance Marathon is an event hosted in Rob Gym every year by UCSB students in support of the patients at Cottage Children’s Medical Center. Participating teams (or individuals) not only fundraise or donate to support the kids, but they get to attend an exclusive celebration with speakers, performances, food, games, and of course—music.

You don’t have to dance, that’s just part of the name. Kickoff is at noon (Saturday Feb. 10th) and festivities will continue until midnight. Yes, it sure is a marathon, but be sure not to miss the Power Hour from 11 PM-12 PM with guests from UCSB DJ Club. The idea is to remain standing as a form of support. “Stand for the kids who can’t,” or #ForTheKids is the committee’s slogan and has prompted some pretty cool garb!

Over the years, Dance Marathon alone has raised over $60,000 for Cottage Children’s Medical Center and have directly supplied sorely needed neonatal units and child-sized gurneys. Although the event only occurs once annually, the students who make up the Dance Marathon board of directors work throughout the year to organize and promote the event. They fundraise, communicate with the hospital and other Miracle Network organizations—but they aren’t the only ones who get in on the fun.

Participants who have fundraised or donated $5 can join the party. It’s that easy. Sponsors can donate to a team here.

There is still time to get involved! Not to mention, this year’s theme is Disney “Under the Sea,” adored by children and college students alike.

As a Biology major pursuing a Writing Minor, HerCampus ensures that writing remains a part of my everyday life. Food, sustainability, science, feminism... my articles reflect my passions and allow me to communicate with readers about student life and the beautiful UC Santa Barbara community.
Hi, Collegiettes! I'm Carmen, a Communication major at University of California, Santa Barbara and one of two Campus Correspondents for UCSB. I would love to one day work in either fashion, food, tech, financial services or philanthropy. My dream is to find a job that somehow combines several of those elements. Until I get there, I'll be munching on copious amounts of Trader Joe's dried mango, jamming out to my man, Frank Sinatra, and focusing on creating intriguing content! If you like my writing, talk to me. ;)
