Beauty Marks Make Us Unique

We live in a world where it’s easy to compare ourselves to others, hoping to make our appearances look exactly like theirs. We live in a generation shaped by influencers whose jobs are to influence the decisions we make, and by social media, where we constantly watch curated versions of other people’s lives and mistake them for reality.

Beauty standards, especially, have created an environment where so many influencers look alike that we begin to believe we should look like them too. We admire the flawless skin, the perfect outfits, and the effortless glow. However, there’s one thing we often overlook: the small details that make each person unique.

Yes, that model’s skin looks flawless. Yes, her outfit is beautiful. Yes, she seems to glow in every photo, but what about the tiny beauty mark near the corner of her face that no one else has?

Even Your favorite people have beauty marks

Take Cindy Crawford, for example. She is known worldwide for her beauty, but one of the things that makes her unforgettable is the mole above her lip. No one else can truly be Cindy Crawford because her uniqueness is part of what made her iconic.

Or Marilyn Monroe, whose beauty mark on her left cheek became one of her signature features. Even actresses like Blake Lively are recognized for the little details that make them different, like the small mole near the corner of her right eye.

And then there’s a normal college girl like me, Melanie Rios, with three beauty marks on the corner of my right cheek that align to form a small triangle. Something so tiny became something so personal to me.

Do men have unique features?

Men have these unique features too. Actors like Robert Pattinson have small beauty marks that subtly make them stand out. Cole Sprouse has a mole on his chin and freckles on his neck, while his identical twin brother, Dylan Sprouse, has a mole above his lip. Even identical twins have differences that make them individuals.

Over the years, beauty has become so heavily focused on makeup, hair, clothes, and trends that we forget to appreciate the little things that truly make us different. The things that separate us from every other person scrolling on social media.

I grew up wondering why I had three little dots on my face that no one else seemed to have, or why my brother had a beauty mark on his finger that I didn’t. Those thoughts made me question why we all looked different from one another. Now I realize that those differences are exactly what make us human.

Still, so many of us try to hide them. We cover beauty marks with makeup. We edit them out of pictures. We convince ourselves that uniqueness is something to erase rather than embrace.

My personal experience

For a long time, I hoped I looked different from everyone around me, not because I wanted to become someone else, but because I wanted something that belonged only to me. I wanted to own my identity. I wanted to be remembered as Melanie, the girl with the little marks on her face that made her special.

I realize that being different is not something to be ashamed of. It’s something to hold onto.

Why should we spend our lives trying to become copies of other people when we were created to be individuals? Why do we hide the very things that make us memorable?

Imagine living in a world where everyone looked exactly the same. The same faces. The same features. The same appearance. There would be nothing that set one person apart from another. No individuality. No uniqueness. No identity.

That is not the kind of world I want to live in.

Embrace who you are

We should stop comparing ourselves to everyone around us and start embracing the things that make us different. Our beauty marks, freckles, scars, birthmarks, and every little detail we once thought we had to hide are reminders that no one else in the world is exactly like us.

That is something beautiful.

So, embrace your beauty marks. Embrace the little details that make you YOU. Be your own person. Break the cycle of constantly wanting to look like everyone else. Because the most beautiful thing anyone can be is original.
