I am not an expert on zombies, but like anyone who has watched The Walking Dead, I often think about my plan for the zombie apocalypse. If you got a call saying the zombie apocalypse had started, what would you do? None of the available options is perfect, but it is a matter of survival that you choose the right one if zombies were to become a real threat. Here is my ill-informed plan of what I would do if the zombie apocalypse started.Â
- : Finding Shelter
-
First things first, finding shelter from the impending wave of zombies is vital. I don’t think zombies would be able to reach my apartment since it is above ground level and needs codes and keys to get in, but I also don’t think I would have enough food to last long there. In theory, I would like to camp out in a grocery store so it would be a while before I ran out of food, but I also understand that stores would be the first place raided and probably overrun in a situation like this. So, the first thing I would do is camp out in my apartment until things had settled down a bit and ration the food and water I have until then.Â

Eventually, the resources I have at home will run out. Venturing out into zombie-ridden Los Angeles does not seem appealing, but at a certain point, there is no other choice. I would arm myself with any weapon-like object I could find in my apartment. Thinking about my options, the best choice I have on hand would probably be a hammer. I would then venture down to the basement garage of my apartment, staying wary about zombies and keeping any exposed skin covered. Once I reached my car, I would drive slowly in order to attract the least attention possible, and I would make the journey to the nearest grocery store.
- : Making it Last
-
My eventual dream would be to move into a grocery store with a seed section where I could cultivate my own food in the future. However, in order to do this, I would have to be able to take over the store and secure it. As in any good zombie movie, I would try to find a group of other survivors who could take on this endeavor with me. Section by section, we would have to clear out the store and eventually, hopefully, we will have a zombie-free environment we could inhabit and call home with resources that would last us.Â
Anyone with real zombie expertise could probably find the errors in my plan, but as someone who has just considered this through hypothetical scenarios, I think this is a pretty solid plan. It is impossible to say what an actual zombie apocalypse would look like. Living in Los Angeles, it is likely that the government would choose to take out the entire city to prevent the spread since it is so high in population. However, it does provide me some comfort to know that I at least have an idea of a plan for survival in the case of zombies.Â
