5 Healthy Habits to help you Combat Flu Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

With winter currently hitting hard in Southern California, people are going to want to stay indoors and not leave for periods of of time. The result? The flu, since other people tend to be in the same space during the cold season and pass on each other’s germs, resulting in the flu. You may not be sick right now but having the flu is inevitable so here are some healthy tips for you to know to ease having the flu.

1. Drinking chamomile tea

Chamomile tea is a relatively known tea known to soothe common flu symptoms, such as having a sore throat, stuffy nostril, or dealing with a migrane. By adding honey, its thickness will help relax the insides of your body as well as making tea even more sweeter to drink.

2. Taking a walk

Studies have shown that taking a walk may help improve your cold symptoms and overall get less sick. For example, if your sinuses are blocked, taking a walk will most likely stimulate to take deep breaths and open up your nose passages.

3. Taking medicine

Medicine will not remove the flu but can make dealing with the symptoms a bit easier. Take the medicine that you are usually used to taking when ill or if you’re not sure, check with your doctor. What may help a friend may not be the best medicine for you. Know the best medicine for you and keep a lookout for those that may give you alternative symptoms, such as drowsiness.

4. Eating chicken noodle soup

Chicken noodle soup provides the nutrients and fluids needed to help your body recover. The heatness from the soup may also unblock nasal passages and protect your body from bacteria and viruses.

5. Getting enough rest

This may seem like something nearly impossible to do, mainly because of the stress that is present in college and the need to complete your assignments in a timely manner. It is okay to give yourself some time for yourself and take a nap or eat a full course meal. Sometimes we may do things to try to rid of the flu altogether but ultimately medication makes dealing with the flu eaiser; the flu will just have to run its course.
