A Little Creativity Every Day Can Go a Long Way

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

Who doesn’t like to be creative and do fun things? Whether you like to create art, cook, play music, or make DIY décor for your room, you have an activity that helps you unwind and be yourself. Because college keeps you busy, making time for these activities can be challenging.

Make time anyway.

A lot of people don’t realize that these leisure activities can really make a difference in your life. You don’t necessarily have to sit down for 3 hours and build a new fancy mirror for your room, but doing little things to boost your spirit can change the entire energy of your day. If you’re feeling overwhelmed because you have a lot going on, take twenty minutes to do something you love. How can you possibly finish all that BIS2A homework if you’re on the verge of having a panic attack or a nervous breakdown?

Find what works best for you.

Different people enjoy different things. Some people express their creativity through activities that are already apart of their daily routine. Cooking and biking are good examples. Others like to set aside some time to do something fun. Take painting for example. If you don’t really know what suits you, here are some suggestions:

  • Go to the arboretum and take pictures.

  • Create an Instagram account that showcases your photos/ art.

  • Make a scrapbook with pictures of your friends or things you like.

  • Cook or bake something new.

  • Paint or draw.

  • Print out pages from an adult coloring book.

  • Do a puzzle.

  • Buy some flowers and garden.

  • Find a fun game in the App Store that you enjoy (beware: addiction may arise).

  • Sing and play music, especially with others.

  • Look up YouTube tutorials (ex: knitting, applying makeup, new hairstyles).

  • Express your thoughts and feelings in a journal.

  • Look for new music on Spotify and dance to it.

If you want to take the initiative and set aside a little bit of time for your own well-being, you’ll see a change in your mood. You’ll enjoy your day a little bit more because you’ll actually be doing things for yourself, not just for your classes. How can you do your school work if you aren’t okay with yourself? What’s more important: your happiness or your classes? I know that seems like a silly question, but really think about it. I think the former wins by a long shot.
