Do Juice Cleanses Really Work?

Summer is coming up and that means swimsuit season is almost here. It also means that people are hitting the gym again and trying out the latest diet craze. A diet craze that still seems to be roaming around on social media and done by celebrities is the cold pressed juice cleanse. A juice cleanse is a three-to-five day program where you eat and drink nothing but 3 bottles of pressed juice a day. Depending on the juice company you are doing the cleanse with, the company will assign the specific type of juice to drink as your breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Although these companies’ mission statements promise to boost your energy and help you maintain a healthier lifestyle, are they physically and financially worth it?

In an experiment, Refinery29 proved why you shouldn’t do a juice cleanse.

1. Doing a juice cleanse will instantly affect your blood sugar, causing headaches, dizziness, and nausea.

2. Nutritionists recommend drinking pressed juice with meals, not as meal replacements.  

Pressed juice removes the fibers in vegetables and fruits, which contains a lot of the nutrients in these foods.

3. It does not actually “detox” your body.

Our liver, intestines, and kidneys are already assigned the job of getting rid of the unwanted stuff in our bodies.

4. It is not effective if you want to lose weight.

You may lose weight while doing the detox, but you will most likely gain it back as soon as the detox is over and you have switched back to solid foods.
