7 Tips for a Positive Morning: Set Yourself Up for the Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

Let’s face it – mornings can be hard. Everyone wants those extra five minutes of sleep, or to stay in the comfort of their own bed. I know I do. And even if we do manage to wake up, the chances of having a productive morning is low. From years of struggling with my morning routine, I’ve learned that the way I start my day can really impact the rest of it. Most importantly, if I have a positive and productive morning then I can set myself up for a good day. That being said, here are seven different tips to help create a positive morning.

1. Hydrate + Stretch

Drinking water when you wake up in the morning is a good way to not only hydrate your body, but to give yourself a refreshing boost to actually get out of bed. Staying hydrated is also key with stretching out right after you wake up. This will improve your flexibility as well as help energize your body. If you feel good, you’ll be more optimistic for the rest of the day.

2. Have Something to Look Forward To

Having a positive mindset in the morning is simple when you have something to look forward to. It can be anything from creating a goal for yourself, to getting out of bed to open the blinds and let the sunshine in. I highly recommend letting the sunshine into your room. The sun is what I look forward to every morning. I’ve found that the warmth of the rays and the beauty of the sun in the morning always keeps me calm, and makes me happy.

3.  Play Music

Turning on your favorite playlist, or playing your favorite vinyl is sure to create a positive atmosphere in the mornings. Listening to your favorite artists is a good way to get you up and moving in the morning. It is also a great way of clearing your head and having fun. Dance, sing, and enjoy the sunshine to keep you positive for the rest of the day.

4. Make Your Bed + Tidy Your Space

This might seem like extra work to do, but making your bed in the mornings can definitely have a positive effect on you and your day. This will automatically make your room look cleaner as well as give you the energy to tidy up the rest of your room. I personally love to do this every morning because not only does it make me feel better to be in a clean room, but it’s also great at clearing my mind. And anyways, who doesn’t love to come home to a clean, made bed?

5. Write in a Journal

Putting all your thoughts on paper right when you get up is another way to keep a positive mindset for the day. I encourage everyone to keep a journal and write whatever comes to mind in it in the mornings. This will help relieve any stress you might have, and free your mind up. Use it to jot down your dreams and feelings. I would recommend you include three things you are grateful for and at least one thing you love about yourself in the journals. Gratitude and self-love are perfect ways to brighten up your morning.

6. Have Breakfast + Entertainment

You hear it all the time: breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I understand that breakfast isn’t everyone’s favorite meal of the day. Personally, I always struggle to have breakfast in the mornings. I’ve learned though that any type of breakfast you choose to have really is a great way to give yourself some time to yourself, and to fuel up. Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with any breakfast food of your choice. It doesn’t have to be anything big and over the top, even just avocado toast or a bagel can help give you energy for the rest of the day. If you fuel yourself with healthy options, this can encourage a healthy, happy mind throughout the day. Breakfast is also a great time to catch up on any shows, movies, podcasts or books you may currently be into.

7. Get Yourself Ready for the Day

Giving yourself time in the mornings to do your skincare routine, makeup, and get dressed can have a positive effect on the rest of the day. Treating your skin right will make you feel refreshed and wake you up more. This will also give you a good base to apply your makeup on, if you choose to wear makeup. Even having some extra time to pick out a cute outfit can help improve the way you feel. If you look good, you’re going to feel good and love yourself more and more each day. Having this time to do what makes you feel good about yourself can set up how you feel the entire day. Get ready, tell yourself you are beautiful and worthy, and it will encourage positive vibes to flow through you all day.

There are so many things you can do to help yourself have a positive morning. Whether you choose to dance and sing, tidy up, journal or more, it can all improve your productivity for the day. Give yourself that time to compose yourself and set up an optimistic day.
