Staying Healthy in the Flu Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Irvine chapter.

In the winter time, there always seems to be a never-ending supply of runny noses and swollen glands.  When those sniffles start it can be hard to stop them.  They are usually preventable with a shot, however, not everyone gets shots.  Here are some tips for staying healthy with or without a shot during Flu Season.

1. Rest up.

Getting eight or more hours of sleep can help keep your body healthy and well-rested.  It may be difficult during the school year, but trying to get as much sleep as you can helps your body to heal.

2. Wash up.

The flu is shared from person to person and in order to avoid getting it and spreading it, it is important to wash your hands as much as you can.  Keep your germs to yourself!

3. Boost your immune system.

Nobel Prize-Winning Chemist, Linus Pauling in his book, How To Live Longer and Feel Better, says that Vitamin C is “essential” for the functioning of the immune system.  Pauling points out that Vitamin C works in the creation (or synthesis) of protein molecules and helps with the normal functioning of cells, making the vitamin a key nutrient when your immune system is down.

4. Drink up.

Your body is roughly made up of 60% water, so it is important to replenish the fluids in your body when feeling under the weather.  Pour yourself a glass as often as you can!

UC Irvine '18

Hi! My name is Nat and I am a third year student at UC Irvine. I'm proud to call sunny Los Angeles my hometown.  I love being a tourist in my own city; going to museums, trying new places to eat, and exploring locations for cute photo-ops!
