The time for taking up residence in libraries across campus is soon upon us – in two weeks’ time, final exam season will begin.

In preparation for this hectic and often stressful time of year, HerCampus would like to provide you with some useful tips for making use of the multitude of resources that the libraries at UBC offer their students to make our lives just that much easier.

Tip #1: Research Guides

Research Guides allow you to take on your paper or project with the sense that you have someone directing you right where you need to go to find the type of sources you need. For example, if you are writing a research essay on the effects of gender stereotypes on mental health, you can consult the Research Guides list and select the “Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Social Justice” tab. From that point, you will have access to several resources that are specifically tailored – by the GRSJ librarian – to provide you with top-knotch resources on all things related to your topic! This is the case for every other subject you could possibly hope to find.

Find the Research Guides list here.

Tip #2: Technology Support & Rentals

Are you a commuter student whose phone or computer has died while you are studying on campus? Have you ever realized that your presentation requires an HDMI adapter, and that you forgot to bring yours with you that day?

Fear not! If these technologoical travesties have occurred to you on any given day, approach the desk on the third floor of IKB and ask for any of the following items (in exchange for a student card):

  • iPhone chargers
  • Android chargers
  • Mac display adaptors (dongles)
  • Calculators
  • Rulers
  • Earplugs (to keep)
  • Film slide holders
  • Headphones
  • Dry erase marker sets
  • LCD projectors
  • Camcorders and tripods
  • Laptops

The folks at the desk will also be more than happy to help you with in-person technological support in the form of printers, scanners, and computers in the Chapman Learning Commons!

Tip #3: Group Study Areas

Many students have friends and classmates that would benefit from studying for finals and working on final projects together a space where they can freely chat and make diagrams or project an assignment up on a wall. To do this, many libraries offer group study spaces that can be booked out online! Book space in IKB, Woodward, Okanagan, and Koerner libraries online.

Tip #4: The Chapman Learning Commons

The Chapman Learning Commons is your go-to location in IKB for help with technology in the library, peer coaching, AMS tutoring, and general study. This space opened in 2002 and is often confused for the infamous “Harry Potter Room” at UBC (it is not, though!). Filled with comfortable chairs with nearby scanners, printers, and state-of-the-art computer programs, you will not be without the necessary tools to accomplish studying, research, or obtaining materials for your project – the CLC has you covered.
