How to Have a Sustainable Thanksgiving

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UAB chapter.

I adore Thanksgiving. It’s a wonderful holiday where we get to spend time with our families, and most importantly, EAT so much delicious food! It’s basically Christmas without the pressure of shopping for the perfect gifts.

However, Thanksgiving can have an impact on Mama Earth by contributing to climate change. We emit tons of carbon during the holidays by flying home, cooking animal/dairy products, and creating food waste. Though it’s not easy to break tradition and have a totally sustainable holiday, there are some measures you can take to cook a sustainable Thanksgiving dinner. Here are some recipes that use low impact ingredients.

1. Whole Roasted Cauliflower

2. Vegan Stuffing

3. Vegan Gravy

4. Vegan Mac N Cheese

5. Green Bean Casserole

6. Cornbread

7. Sweet Potato Casserole

8. Don’t forget to reduce waste and use up your leftovers! Here’s a waffle sandwich recipe using leftovers.
