Going from Teen to Adult: Turning 20

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UAB chapter.

Everyone seems to think that turning 20 isn’t that big of a deal. You’re not a teenager anymore, but you also aren’t legal to drink yet so it’s kind of an awkward in between. However, I think turning 20 is a pretty big deal because you’re officially not a kid anymore, and it’s also the first chapter in your story of adulthood. As someone who’s turning 20 next week, here’s a few reasons why I’m excited to be a part of the dub club.

1.     Officially Not a Teenager Anymore

Never again do I have to say that I’m something-teen; those awkward teen years are finally over.

     2.  You’re Going to Experience a New Transition in Life

You are going to change- no if, and’s, or but’s about it. This is the time to rediscover yourself and find out who you really want to be. Change isn’t always necessarily a bad thing, but there will be those who grow with you, and those who should be left in your teen years’ memory.

    3.   You Are Officially Not a Kid Anymore

Say goodbye to curfews, but don’t be ready to say goodbye to your parents being overprotective or strict. Old habits die hard.

   4.  You Beat Teen Pregnancy

That alone is a reason to celebrate.

   5.   Remember to Still Spend Time with Family

Yes, you’re an adult now and will be coming up with your own routine in life; however, don’t forget to spend time with the people who have been there for you since Day 1.

  6. “The Best Years of Your Life”

I’m sure that everyone was told that college will be the next best 4 years of your life. They also say that your 20’s are the best years because it’s your time to live life the way you want to, so have fun and be free!

  7.  This is the Decade that Everything Happens

You are going to graduate college and start your career. Next comes marriage and building a family, but don’t be talked into thinking that this is the path you have to take because it’s traditional. Find the right path for you, make yourself happy, make mistakes and learn from them, but above all you’re only in your 20’s for 10 years so live it up with no regrets!
