Daily Self-Care Reminders: Phrases to Make a Habit for Every Mood

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Vic chapter.

When plans don’t go as expected and life lets you down, it’s key to find little tricks to pick yourself back up and keep going. Your mind is a powerful tool and little phrases spoken out loud can drastically change your mood from grim to great.

Over the years, I’ve begun to use phrases both of my own creation and from people around me in order to be resilient. Here are eight quotes you can use to bring out the positive, confident person you are in the face of adversity.

1. “I have to put on my life jacket before I put on yours.” Safety instructions from every airplane, ever. Sometimes, I forget to put my needs before the needs of others. This line always sets that straight so I can be my healthiest, best version of myself.

2. “What would make my heart happy today?” Because your heart matters. Sometimes I just gotta treat myself—what can I say?

3. “What would my ideal night after work/school look like?” Cue your imagination. Okay, now how can I make that happen? Because you really can do what you want. There’s nothing stopping me (most days), so why not have my friends over for homemade PSLs or go for a hike? Replenish your soul with fun when you’ve got the time and energy!

4. When everything goes wrong and you just need something to celebrate: “Well, at least I made my bed this morning.” Hopefully that’s true for you. I cannot stress how often I say this to myself. It’s a phrase that always makes me laugh, smile and move on from what’s troubling me, so try it!

5. When you feel a wee bit jealous: “I’m happy for them and I bet they’re happy for me, too.” Because let’s not forget that you can both be awesome and no one needs to get jealous.

6. When a group of people get catty, you can be the person to speak up: “I’m so inspired by everyone in this room right now. I love how we can all be bosses and support each other.” Just in case you need to set the room straight.

7. When you need a reminder that you’re a boss: “CEO mentality.” —Carly (yes, I just quoted myself).

8. “I’m a queen and thou art not worthy.” —Carly (whoops, quoted myself again).
