After spending my first semester at uOttawa in one of the many residence buildings, I’ve come to understand that not every roommate is the same. Like personalities, roommates also come in lots of different flavours. Which means no roommate is the same.
So how do you know what type of roommate you’re living with? Which roommate are you?
The Ghost
The roommate you barely see, or know about. This is the roommate who you see on occasion, because they’re most likely in class when you are home, out during the weekends when you get back, and in general they’re nowhere to be found.
The Clean Freak
This is the roommate who likes everything to be clean and organized. They’re probably cleaning every week and are always tidying up after themselves before they leave the bathroom and the room. They like everything to be organized and put away in the right spot.
The Hermit
This is the roommate you don’t see during midterm and finals season. This roommate is always studying or doing their homework, rarely going out or doing anything other than school. They like staying home to read ahead for their classes, and they prefer finishing their work rather than binging a series on Netflix.
The Forgetful One
This is the roommate who constantly forgets their keys, books, chargers, laptop, phone or food. You might hear them knocking on your door to let them in so they can get to their room to grab whatever they forget in their bedroom. Everyone forgets things from time to time, this roommate just sometimes forgets things more than everyone normally does.
The Party Animal
This roommate is the person who goes out every single weekend because they like to dress up, socialize and have fun. They’re always bringing new people around to party with, and they tend to introduce you to all their new friends. This is the roommate who likes having a good time and will bring you along to have some fun on a Saturday night.
The New Best Friend
This is the roommate that you meet for the first time and instantly click with. You share the same taste in music, TV shows and movies. You’re probably taking classes that are similar which means you’ll also be able to study together. This roommate is the first friend you make at university, and probably one of the many you’ll keep throughout the years of your degree.
The Best of All Worlds
The roommate that encompasses all of the traits of each type of roommate. The best combination, the perfect mix. This is the roommate you instantly click with, the one you like talking to and cracking jokes with. You can always hang out with them, but they can also give some space when needed. This is the roommate who you get along with, that goes out to party but also loves a good weekend in, and who is a great friend. This roommate is the perfect combination that makes your year in residence so memorable.
Every roommate is different and it’s the best kind of adventure when you meet your new friend and figure out what kind of roommate you’re living with. No matter which kind of roommate you get, having a roommate is one of the best experiences of university.
