Mid-March Reflections

With less than six full weeks before classes are over and exams begin, the end of the semester is so close! Having just returned from my sunny spring break backpacking trip in Utah a little over a week ago, getting back into the swing of things at school has been an adjustment, to say the least. I’ve taken some much-needed time to reflect on what I learned from my trip and truly feel that endeavoring to stay present will help me in so many ways and will especially allow me to enjoy the rest of this semester more. Stemming from my reflections, here are some reminders for myself and you to stay present as we finish out this semester!

Get outside!

Even if this spring weather is funky, getting outside for even just a little is so beneficial and helps me feel so much more present. Invite a friend to walk with you in the Arb, add five minutes to your walk between classes if you have time, or pick one of the many outdoor benches on campus as a study spot! 

Journal!

I know this really may not be something you think you’d like, but don’t knock it till you’ve tried it! Your entries can be as surface-level or as in-depth as you’d like, and it’s okay if you only write one sentence for each entry. Getting into the habit of reflecting has helped me stay more present and allows me to cherish each moment, good and bad, for what I’ve learned.

Reduce screen time!

I know this one is so difficult and a bit cliché, but I truly feel this can be such a distraction and really gets in my way in terms of staying present. Starting small is helpful in terms of working on your phone usage. Perhaps start by trying to avoid using your phone when you eat, walk to class, and hang out with friends. Not only might you find yourself being more productive when you use your phone less, but also you may find yourself being more mindful.

All of these goals are by no means rigid and if you find yourself committing to them and then regressing, do not beat yourself up over it! The only aim is to be more present, and setbacks are natural. Finding what works for YOU–even something small–is the best thing that can be achieved in efforts to be more present.

Gwyneth is studying Communication and Media and sustainability at the University of Michigan. She is a proud NOLS alum, and her most cherished memories involve the outdoors. Gwyneth loves to hike, listen to music, swim (in Lake Michigan!), do crafts, backpack, watch movies, try different foods, and ski.
