Going Off Campus: Three Reasons to Explore New Places

Campus can be such an amazing place and second home filled with friends, memories, and comfort. A place where students enjoy spending their time and a place filled with love and growth. But sometimes staying on campus can just be too much. It can be too much for your mental health, increasing procrastination, reducing productivity, and feeling like you are stuck in a bubble. Here are a few reasons why you should go off campus every once in a while.

Mental Health

One of the most important reasons to step off campus, even just for an hour to grab coffee, is for your mental health. Being in the same environment every single day can become overwhelming, especially when your living space and study spaces are connected to stress, assignments, and the high academic and competitive environment of UM. Taking a break by leaving campus can help reset your body and mind. Whether it is going for a walk, eating a meal, hanging out with friends, shopping, or exploring a new cafe, the distance from campus allows your brain to relax and destress. When you return, students often feel more relaxed, focused, and ready to work on their responsibilities again.

A New Environment

Another benefit to getting off campus is studying in a new environment. While U Mich has many study spaces and libraries, they can sometimes become too normalized and too much of just a step in your routine, rather than a place to be intentional. They can be associated with distraction, and a feeling of being burnt out. It also doesn’t help that UM study spaces are always extremely crowded. A change of scenery can improve your concentration and motivation to finish your assignment. New environments can help you stay engaged in your work and give you a reason to lock in. Even something as minuscule as having a fun drink like a coffee can make a big difference in how well you stay on task.

Productivity

Being off campus can also make you more productive. When you intentionally choose a space to get work done, you are more likely to stay focused and use your time efficiently. There are often fewer interruptions compared to being around friends or familiar spaces where it is easy to procrastinate. Stepping away creates a sense of purpose. You put in the effort to get there, whether driving or taking public transport. You went there to get something done and with a goal in mind, so with that mindset alone you can drastically increase your productivity.

Ultimately, going off campus creates a balance in your life. It allows a break from routine and allows you to reset and be more intentional with your actions. It allows you to take control and feel less trapped. By stepping outside of the campus bubble, students can return with a clearer mind, stronger focus, and an increased sense of motivation.
