University Life Between Success and Struggle

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

There are many ways people see success: it is something that you can brag about to everyone, something big that can be on all your social media, and something everyone will praise and congratulate you for. In university, success is definitely all those things, and more. A LOT MORE.

I’ll be giving you some scenarios and you decide whether it’s a success or not.

You have an 8 a.m. class (Urgghh already a struggle, am I right?). You wake up, get out of bed. You have enough time before heading to class to make your bed. You head to class. You’re a little late to class because the weather was against you, but you did get to class.

That right there was obviously a success. An everyday thing you accomplished without a thought. Adding up the things you did just before an 8 a.m. class, you have had multiple accomplishments – five to be exact.

OK, here’s another one.

You woke up earlier than your alarm but didn’t get out of bed till past your alarm. You realized you should’ve got out of bed earlier because now you’re late for class. You hurried out of your room leaving your bed a mess. You’re walking/running to your class with your shoes untied while eating the snack you grabbed right before you left. You got to class panting. You tried listening but ended up spacing out because you were still tired from yesterday’s event, and you missed the first few minutes of class. So, after the class, you watched a video about the topic in the lecture or the lecture recording instead.

In case you didn’t notice, that right there was also a success. Things in life will never go perfectly every day and as long as you’re trying, it always ALWAYS counts as a success. Some days just don’t go as planned and sometimes you don’t always give things 100%, but at the end of the day, you tried, and that’s what matters.

These little things you do in a day like getting out of bed, getting to class even if you’re a little late, remembering to feed yourself, and having the time to daydream, are all little trophies that you can display on the shelf of your everyday life. Success and struggle come hand in hand, and in the past week, I learned it. I LEARNED IT GOOOOD…
