5 Everyday Habits to Make you Become a Morning Person

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Waking up early can be tough for a lot of people, especially those of us who are night owls. With some nifty tips and tricks, however, there are ways you can fool yourself into thinking you’re a morning person. Most people do say that they are most productive between the hours of 5 a.m. to 12 a.m., so the old saying “the early bird catches the worm” may be true.

1) Avoid the Snooze Button

Although this seems obvious, it can also be very difficult. This is actually one of the worst things you can do in the mornings, because once you press it once, chances are you are going to press it again…and again. That is why it is important to get right up the first time you hear the alarm go off. One trick to help you with this is to put your alarm clock out of reach from your bed. This forces you to actually get out of bed to shut it off and once you are out of bed you can force yourself to start the day.

2) Set a Sleep Schedule

According to sleepfoundation.org, your body has a circadian rhythm, which is an internal 24-hour clock that tells your body when it is time to sleep and when it is time to be alert and awake. Your body’s circadian rhythm works the best when you have regular sleeping habits, going to bed and waking up around the same time every day. This means that, if you try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day your body will be more accustomed and it will become easier for you to wake up in the mornings.

3) Have a Good Breakfast

An important start to a productive day is having a good breakfast. This will give you the energy for the day and coffee will definitely help to wake you up in the mornings. Foods with protein are the best for the mornings, such as fruits or vegetables to energize you for the day. Plus, the thought of bacon and eggs from the dining halls is definitely enough to get me out of my bed in the mornings.

4) Change Your Alarm Clock Sound

Switching up your alarm clock sounds can help you get out of bed and start your day in a good mood. It is a good idea to set your alarm clock to your favorite songs or sounds. I know that if I hear my favorite song first thing in the morning, I am automatically feeling good about the day. According to premiersleepsolutions.com, scientists have suggested that soothing tones are the best to wake up to because this helps your brain wake up to happy thoughts. Some good soothing tones may be the sound of waves crashing or smooth jazz.

5) Make a Morning Playlist

A morning playlist with some of your favorite songs is a good way to help you feel better in the mornings and put you in a good mood. This can help motivate you and get you ready for the day. Set a speaker or some headphones next to your bed at night and start your day off with some good music!
