With so many different workout routines and programs out there, it can be hard to find the right one for you. Here at Iowa, we wanted to sample a few classes that the CRWC (Campus Recreation and Wellness Center) and let you know how they are. This way, you have an idea of which one might be just right for you.
On Friday, I took my first Zumba class ever. Â At first, I was a little skeptical since it was my first time, but the instructor, Olivia, was amazing. She made the class so much fun and full of energy! The class had about 25 girls in it including some elderly women that wanted to try something fun. We started with a nice warm-up to get the blood pumping. After a few minutes of this, Olivia turned up the Latin music and got us going.Â
She did her best to teach us the moves, but the majority of the girls were lost several times throughout the workout. The moves were fast paced, and unless you were a dance major, it was hard to be coordinated enough to get them all down smoothly in just 60 minutes. Although it was meant to be a workout, I felt like I was being taught some awesome, sexy dance moves. Next time I go out I plan on using a few of them on the dance floor.
While I couldn’t always figure out what steps we were supposed to be doing, I ended the class with sweat running down face. The pace and constant moving definitely gives you a good workout. My butt, legs and abs sure felt this the next day! I would definitely rate this class as hard. It wasn’t too extreme, but there were several times where my muscles burned so bad I just had to take a quick break!
Overall, I loved Zumba. Olivia got me hooked. The more you go to her class, the more you’ll get the moves down and won’t be so lost. Â I recommend going with a friend, so you have someone to laugh about your awkward dance skills with. If you want to give it a try, you can find Olivia teaching Zumba every Friday at noon in the CRWC, usually in room 320.
