8 Ways To Be More Positive

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

Do you see the glass as half-empty or half-full? Optimism is a wonderful asset, and by seeing the glass as half-full, you can inspire others to have the same positive outlook. Try these simple steps to invite more positivity into your life and become a happier person.

1. Smile

Smiling is such a simple action, but it really does go a long way. Putting a smile on your face instantly makes yourself feel happier and will inspire others to do the same!

2. Help others

One of the greatest and most fulfilling ways to be a positive person is to help others. A simple act of kindness could turn someone’s entire day around, and you will have satisfaction knowing you made someone’s day a little brighter.

3. Journal

Journaling is such an effective way to rid yourself of negative, toxic thoughts. There is something theraputic about taking pen to paper to release any feelings of anger and worry that get in the way of our own happiness. An exercise as simple as writing down 10 things you are thankful gets your mind going in the right direction again. Seeing your thoughts concretely in this way will help you practice mindfulness by giving attention to the type of thoughts you are having.

4. Exercise

The mental and physical benefits exercise has on the body is amazing. By releasing endorphines, the mind is able to think more clearly and the body rids itself of negative energy. You will feel less stressed and having a positive mindset will be much easier to achieve.

5. Practice meditation

Taking the time to meditate and be alone with your thoughts does wonders. Simply taking the time to slow down and practice awareness of your thoughts will help you get rid of the toxic thoughts that don’t serve you. Practicing midfulness in this way will provide mental clarity in your life, and you will feel more at ease.

6. Turn any negative you can into a positive

Although we may not be able to control the situations that happen in our lives, we always have the option to control how we respond to them. For example, instead of complaining about how much studying you need to get done for your next exam, be thankful that you have the opportunity to get an education. I know it’s harder than it seems sometimes, but perspective is everything. There is always a positive to be found in any circumstance, and the more attention you give to the positive versus the negative, the happier you will be.

7. Call a loved one

When you feel overwhelmed and surrounded by negative thoughts, calling a friend or a parent to vent is a healthy way to release negative energy. When these thoughts and words are spoken, you feel them being released from your mind as well. The person you call may also be able to give advice and a new perspective on whatever is stressing you out or bringing you down.

8. Surround yourself with positive friends

Energy is contagious, and who you hang out with has a tremendous impact on your mental health. When you surround yourself with positive and uplifitng friends, you will also be a more positive person.

Optimism is a beautiful mindset, and it feels so much better than allowing negative thoughts to cloud our minds. There is always a positive to be found in any situation, and simple changes in our lives can help us bring positivity in our lives. I hope you remember to light up the world with your beautiful smile because there is so much to be happy about and thankful for!
