Tips for Your First Internship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

What’s that? You just landed your first internship? Wow, congratulations, that’s incredible! *sniff* I remember when you were just entering your freshman year. *sniff sniff* Where does the time go?

Oh, you’re nervous you say?

Don’t be, you were hired for a reason. Let me give you some quick pointers on your first big girl job to help you walk into that office ready to slay.

Here are some tips…

Remember, you are qualified for this position. Be confident in your abilities.
Plan your morning commute the day before and give it a test run before your first day.
That being said, don’t get overly confident. Know when your opinion is, and is NOT, asked for.
Practice how you will introduce yourself (don’t forget a solid handshake!).
When in doubt, over dressing is ALWAYS better than under dressing.
Pack food. Good workers require good fuel. Bring snacks and a lunch until you’re familiar enough with the building/area to go out.
Ask questions, it’s the best way to show passion and interest in your new position.
Don’t be afraid to admit to feeling overwhelmed. It’s okay to say, “It’s a lot to absorb, but I can’t wait to get started! Can I contact you later if I have any questions?”
For the love of all that is holy, silence your phone.
Finally, relax. I know it’s hard, but do your best to be calm. You worked hard to land this position, but no one is going to fire you for asking to use the bathroom. Appearing calm, confident, and relaxed will make you seem in control and reliable.

I hope these tips serve you well on your first day! Now go pick out your first day outfit, pack your lunch, and get some beauty sleep!

I've been told I'm quite loud, but I prefer the term "expressive".
