I Completed Whole30, Here’s What You Should Know!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Sick of feeling bloated from all the sweets and carbs you’ve been eating over quarantine? The Whole30 detox is for you! You don’t ever need to feel ashamed, but this is the perfect lifestyle change for making you feel as good as new!

At the beginning of quarantine, I was very on top of my health and wellness. I was working out 3-4 times a week along with eating cleanly. But, after a while, that became old news and I just didn’t care about what I put into my body anymore. The world was so negative, so my mindset about my health and wellness became negative too and I gave up on the awesome journey I started. But, after a couple of weeks of not taking good care of my mind and body, I decided I needed to change that. So, I did some research and I found the Whole30! My parents have done this detox before and they said that it changed their life, so I was super motivated to do it! Both of my parents decided to do it with me so it was nice to have a partner, especially someone who’s gone through it, to push and motivate me.

The Whole30 is a gut detox where you cut out added sugar, alcohol, grains, legumes, dairy, baked goods, and junk foods for 30 days. It sounds impossible just reading that sentence, and during the first couple days it felt impossible, but after the first week, it started to become like second nature. The goal is to reset and nourish your body with enriching whole foods. It’s not about counting calories or weighing yourself, it’s about treating your body right and eliminating foods that don’t make you feel good.

I learned so much about discipline and self-control during this detox. It taught me that you can say no, and saying no means you’re helping yourself and not punishing. I also learned a lot about cooking during these 30 days. My parents and I were very creative and made some amazing recipes; Pinterest was definitely our friend! Instead of eating sandwiches with bread, we would have them on lettuce wraps. Instead of chips, we would munch on some fresh fruit. It was these little changes that really changed the way I felt. There were hard days where all I wanted was sweets or bread, but the majority of the time I felt so energized and happy. The hardest part was the aftermath where I started to reintroduce the foods I hadn’t eaten for 30 days; the first time eating grain I was left with a horrible migraine and feeling sluggish.

In doing this detox, I now know what my body likes and doesn’t like. This doesn’t mean that I won’t ever eat bread or sweets again, because who can live without that; instead, it’s about balance and having these foods once in a while rather than every day. I’m very proud of myself for pushing through and completing this detox. I challenge all of you to do something good for yourself, whether it be the Whole30 or just stepping outside for 10 minutes. During this time we need to make our health and wellbeing our number one priority!
