From the time I was small, I have been surrounded by the idea that your 20’s are the best years of your life. From the fun parties, and late nights to extravagant dates and large friend groups, I couldn’t wait to turn 20. Then my life would really start, right? Well, let me tell you, my 20’s have been nothing like the movies. Prior to the COVID-19 lockdown, I almost never went out, and most nights you can find me in bed by 10:30. I guess you could say I’m a bit of a grandma. While this may sound boring, it’s actually taught me some lessons about what is really important.

Sometimes, there’s nothing better than a night in.

Lots of university culture centers on the idea that there’s nothing better than going out to crazy parties that last until the wee hours of the night. And if that’s your thing, go for it! But sometimes, after a long day, there’s nothing better than a restorative night in–one full of self-care and relaxation. Even if you love going out, balance is key to both your mental and physical well being!

You don’t have to get drunk to have fun!

Honestly, I’m really not much of a drinker. If you are, good for you! I’m not here to rain on anyone’s parade. Unfortunately for me, some people think I’m a bit of a bore because I’m content to sip on a glass of wine over dinner or a single beer around the campfire. And maybe a few years ago, I also thought that made me boring in comparison to all of my friends. However, as I’ve embraced my inner twentysomething granny, I’ve learned that fun is something that you define on your own terms. For some of us, that’s going out clubbing, for me, that’s sitting on my couch knitting up a storm, a single glass of wine in hand.

A warm beverage can fix almost everything.

Need indulgence after a bad day? Hot cocoa. Didn’t get enough sleep last night? Coffee. Stressed about your midterm? Tea. Honestly, you can’t convince me that a warm and cozy beverage can’t fix 99% of your life problems. Okay, maybe not fix, but it will definitely make you feel at least a little bit better.

A good hobby is truly therapeutic.

We could all use something in our life that truly sparks joy for us. Something that we can turn to after a hard day, when we are bored, or just need something to occupy our minds. Whether that’s curling up on the couch with a good book, knitting, crafting, or baking, it is so important to do something that you enjoy, even if it’s for only 20 minutes.

Take joy in the little things, like pyjamas!

It is so important to have little pieces of joy scattered throughout your day. This is especially true for students who likely live on a tight budget and go without regular luxuries. For me, having something as simple as some cozy socks that I really love, or soft pyjamas can make everyday even a little bit special for me, and that really makes all the difference.
