How To Get Fit Without Leaving Your Dorm Room

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tufts chapter.

That feeling is all too familiar: you wake up after a late night out ending in a blue zone and you just want to stay in bed in your pajamas all day. The thought of putting on gym clothes and trekking all the way to the gym is unfathomable. Have no fear Collegiettes—there are plenty of ways to work out in the comfort of your own room! Taking 30 minutes a day to exercise in any form will not only help keep your waistline and heart health in check, but will also help to clear your mind temporarily from that huge econ paper you have to do. Here are some tips you can follow to help get your dorm workout regimen started!

Dorm Workout Tip #1:

Take advantage of that dorm room furniture! There are many simple exercises that you can use your desk and desk chair for. Here are some ideas:

  • Do abdominal tucks off your desk chair
  • Do pushups using your desk

  • Do arm extensions using those heavy textbooks you have yet to open
  • Do a fun variation of a push-up: Place your hands on the edge of your desk (a little wider than shoulder-width apart). Keep your feet on the ground, your back flat and, and your chest in line with the edge of the desk. Slowly lower your chest down, bending at the elbows until you’re about 6 inches from the desk. Push your body back up to the starting position. Repeat!
  • Use the edge of your desk as support for doing pushups
  • Do bench dips off your desk chair

Cardio is important too! Here are some fun cardio exercises to get your heart pumping and release some endorphins. Try these as a quick study break to clear your mind and regain focus.

– Hula-hoop

– Jump rope

– Jumping jacks

– Mountain climbers

– Jogging in place

– High knees

– Squat jumps

– Dancing to your favorite music (refer to Hannah in Girls if you need inspiration)

If you are feeling extra ambitious, use dumbbells or fill a bag with textbooks and hold it while you do these exercises for extra resistance.
