3 TV Shows that Helped me Cope with My First Year of College.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TAMU chapter.

When I first started college, I remember having a hard time adapting to my new life away from home. At times, academic stress and the feeling of loneliness would be so overwhelming that I didn’t think I was going to make it through my first semester of college. After trying so many things to cope with anxiety, such as yoga and extracurricular activities, I was able to find comfort in what I least expected: TV shows.

With nothing more than a computer and a Netflix account, I noticed my mood starting to improve significantly. I no longer felt overwhelmed with schoolwork. In fact, I would catch myself excited to do it, as it meant I’d also have the opportunity to play my favorite TV show in the background. I am aware that for many students, background noise might be distracting, but for me, it was the complete opposite. Listening to my favorite scenes and glancing at the screen to see the familiar faces of my favorite characters made me feel less alone.

So, if you are currently dealing with academic anxiety, homesickness, or the stress that comes with transitioning to remote learning, here is a list of 3 TV shows that are sure to cheer you up. I hope you enjoy it!

  1. The Vampire Diaries

I was first introduced to this show by my good friend Amy during my junior year of high school. And to this day, I have watched all 8 seasons at least three times. The storyline, characters, and soundtrack are pure perfection. Give it a try! I promise you’ll laugh, cry, and fall in love with every episode.

  1. Once Upon A Time

I first attempted to watch this show during my senior year of high school. However, I was so busy with college applications, classes, and other extracurriculars that I never got past the 5th episode. Once I started college -and my multitasking skills improved- I realized how much I was missing out on! OUAT is not only a show full of mystery. It reinforces the importance of FAMILY and teaches us that no matter how far we are from our loved ones, “if you love them, and they love you, they will always find you.”

  1. H2O: Just Add Water

A storyline that focuses on friendship, magic, and MERMAIDS is only one of the million things that make H2O: Just Add Water THE PERFECT feel-good TV show. Whether you watch it while doing homework or during your free time, this show is sure to relieve stress and put a smile on your face!

That is it for this article! I hope at least one of these shows brightens your day and makes this semester less overwhelming.
