As we grow into our young adult years, we tend to forget that we will soon be faced with the realities of adulthood. Through these stress-inducing times of our twenties and figuring out what is to come, the important aspects of our lives in front of us slip away. Here are five realizations of growing up that we should all keep in our back pockets in trying to remember what is significant to our lives in the present.

1. As we grow up, the people around us are also growing up

Though we are growing and learning through our twenties, people such as family and friends are also growing older too. Remembering to cherish time spent with those around us will give us more of a perspective on the importance of the present. Whether it be family members, friends, colleagues, or even our childhood pets, acknowledging that everyone is inevitably aging and changing is a hard reality we are forced to face, which we can choose to make the most of rather than facing regret in the future.

2. Struggling does not mean failing

Becoming an adult is hard, there is no other way to put it. We are constantly faced with challenges whether that be obstacles faced or not seeing through something you worked really hard on. Just because you may be struggling in the moment does not mean you are failing in life as a whole.

3. Surround yourself with like-minded souls

This is a concept that can be hard for people in their twenties to come to terms with. As we grow older and mature into the person we are becoming, the people we choose to surround ourselves with have to be those who fulfill you. If you surround yourself with people who understand you and accept you for who you are fully, the more fulfilled and happy you will grow to be.

4. The Burnt toast theory

The burnt toast theory basically states that if you burn your toast, which may set you back in the morning, this may prevent you from something negative happening later in the day, which you may have encountered if that toast was not burnt. This theory ultimately reminds us to slow down in our daily lives and to remember that events happen for a reason. Had you maybe not burnt your toast, you may have experienced something that could have been worse or more negative, the toast saved you despite it being a small inconvenience.

5. Choose a career that will fufill you

In deciding which career to pursue after college, ensure that it is something which may excite or fulfill your daily life. College is the time to experiment and see which major and career will spark your interests the most. Remember that this career is one you may pursue the rest of your life; taking time to search and decide on a career you love will be crucial to happiness in the future.
