8 Stages of Going to the Gym (As Told By Amy Schumer)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.

We know going to the gym is important, and we try really hard to get ourselves there at least three times a week. But let’s be real: It’s not always as simple as lacing up your shoes and heading out the door.

1. You debate not going.

You’re tired, you’ve had a long day, and going to the gym doesn’t sound as good as curling up on the couch and stuffing your face.

2. You try to find a gym buddy.

Once you muster up the courage to stop being lazy, you need to find a workout buddy. You text your roommate and beg her to come with you. “It will be fun,” you say. Your roommate knows the truth though, and she is 100% ready to sit on the couch and watch The Bachelor instead.

3. You finally convince your workout buddy to come along.

You thank them profusely, promising them that it will be worth it. Secretly, you’re so glad they agreed to come with you because had they not, chances are you would have binge watched Orange is the New Black.

4. You arrive to the gym with your BFF.

You found your workout buddy, who you can always rely on to get you motivated. You guys show up to the gym and strike a pose, showing the world you’re ready to get $#*% done.

5. You stare around, wondering where to start.

You try to maintain your level of confidence as your workout buddy heads to the weight room, but really you have no clue why you came here and you’re not 100% sure you’re ready for this. Is that guy really bench pressing 250? Get me out of here!

6. You debate going home.

You find your groove on the elliptical, but it’s boring. And it’s hard! “I seriously need to start eating better and coming here more often so this gets easier,” you think to yourself.

7. You wipe off your sweat and you go to work.

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger! You grab your towel, wipe off your sweat, and turn up the intensity.

8. Success!

You finish your workout, and you’ve never felt better! Same place tomorrow?
