Meditation comes in many forms. It’s a way in which we calm the mind and focus on the present moment. It wasn’t until the past year that I truly committed to meditation daily and got to see the incredible effects it’s had on my body, mind and soul.

Meditation has been incredibly useful as a college student. It has helped me become realigned and focused. As a college student, we’re constantly juggling between family, friends, work and school. The instability of our early twenties can at times get to our heads. Meditation had personally given me that gateway into realigning myself into focusing on what matters. It has helped me understand my thoughts better and not to take them so seriously.

You may say,

“I can’t meditate” or “Meditation is boring”.

I was you too.

I have been able to achieve a similar feeling through solo walks in Petaluma, CA at Shollenberger Park or through daily journal writing, although some days we don’t have time to go on a walk or we may not enjoy writing. However, we all can take ten minutes out of our day to focus on ourselves. It was not until the use of an app recommended to me by a friend that kept me consistent in taking time out of my day to practice meditation.

This app is called Headspace. I recommend this app because it offers simple guidance needed for those who find it too difficult to settle the mind and focus for a longer period of time. It took me about a month to work my way from meditating for three minutes up to fifteen minutes. I found this to be incredible. I listen to one ten minute session a day. I’ll meditate usually laying down in my bed or sitting in a chair in the library in between classes and will feel immediately refreshed! I was even able to eventually meditate without the use of the app! HOWEVER, as a college student, this past summer they began to offer a deal to students for only $9.99 for the year! Take advantage of this deal because it is around $100 for a year for those who are not students. It is totally worth the price and includes sessions based on self esteem, relationships, prioritization, motivation, which we all need as busy college students. I’ve noticed a dramatic change in my focus in school, as well as less anxiety and a calmer mind. These are only a few reasons why I now cannot go a day without meditating.

Meditation may or may not be for you, but I do think taking time out of your day to calm the mind, reflect and relax is for everyone. Headspace may or may not be for you, but it’s worth giving it a shot like I did.

Don’t give up, the mind is a muscle and consistency is key!
