1.     Start slowly

It’s easy to push yourself too hard and then exhaust your body. Start with light weights and slowly progress. Don’t be embarrassed to use 5 lbs. You’d be surprised at how toned you can get by following a routine and not overdoing it.

2.     Make a routine

I love going in the morning because it gets it out of the way and I can feel good knowing that if I don’t do anything for the rest of the day, at least I worked out. Find the time that you love going and stick with it!

3.     Don’t make excuses

There is always work to do and you will get it done. You need some personal time too! Once you stop working out, it is hard to start again.

4.     Research

I cannot stress this enough… RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH. Do not hurt yourself because you didn’t look up how to properly do a deadlift. Your phone is always on you, use it to educate you!

5.     Apps

I wanted to start lifting weights but didn’t know how to target certain spots on my body. I follow accounts on Instagram and finally decided to purchase the app “Sweat” in order to feel like I was doing the right exercises. I love it! I did the 12-week challenge and found it to be incredibly informative.  It’s also at your own pace!

6.     Don’t worry

Ignore that sweaty, bodybuilder who lifts 250 pounds and carries a gallon of water. They were in your shoes once. Also, they aren’t thinking about anyone but themselves. Be kind to yourself!

7.     Diet

a.     If you are going to the gym twice a day and trying to be jacked, then eat more. But since most of us aren’t, we can’t eat more than normal. Remember, it’s quality, not quantity. Once you start eating healthier, you won’t crave as much sugar. Also, your body will thank you!

8.     HYDRATE

I started carrying my water bottle with me EVERYWHERE! Not only will it make your skin healthier, but if you ever need to fidget with something or pretend to be busy, you can drink water! I like to mix up my drinks and add lemon or other fruits too! I don’t like carbonation, so soda never was an issue, but there are also healthy options other than water, such as Kombucha or Vitamin Water Zero. Just make sure you look to see how much sugar is in the drink, not just calories.

9.     Mix it up

I love adding workout classes into my routine. Personally, I joined Core Power which is a mix of hot yoga and core workout. I never thought I would love it as much as I do. Most schools also offer their own free classes so take advantage.

10.  Fun

Most importantly, just have fun! Put in some headphones and jam out.
