I Know What Happened When The Caged Bird Sang

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Scranton chapter.

An abstract thought for your interpretation.

Even when it seems impossible, doing nothing and adopting complacency won’t fix the broken road. If you push against the wall with all of your might, at some point, one of you will fall. But should that make it impossible? Would not another person greet a weaker wall with new strength, and a have greater chance of toppling it? Sometimes our actions give way to something better – not necessarily for ourselves, but for others.

I Know What Happened When The Caged Bird Sang

Michael Kulick

I know why the caged bird sings.

It sees shadows and death, despair

On its wings, its feathers

Chilled by the crisp autumn air.

I know why the caged bird sings.

It whistled and yelled

At the shadows – evil things –

And hoped they’d dispel back to hell.

I know what happened when the caged bird sang.

Someone came in with a gun,

Cocked the hammer, aimed, and then – a bang.

They left that bird, never again to see sun.

I know what happened when the caged bird died.

Its spirit took flight,

And soared with such might-

You’d think it alive.

* * *

I know what happened when they bought a new bird,

A bird that caught word of the other caged bird.

It knew not to sing, but it died in a day,

For from fear, no song so silent, choked it anyway.
