With constant back-to-back appointments, coffee reunions with old friends, and the never-ending family dinners at the start of the new year, it’s easy to get caught up in the flow of life and to overlook the importance of having an organized living space.

Being it is a month into 2020 now, the new-year-new-you approach to organization is the perfect excuse to declutter your space in order to create positive change and reset your mind for the year. Whether or not you’re one to meticulously set goals and resolutions, there’s no doubt that 2020 is filled with fresh energy, possibility, and enthusiasm.

Through purging one aspect of your living space at a time, you’ll gradually be able to see the beneficial impact that organizing your space has on your mind. Over time, the mighty task will seem less like a chore, and by the end of the process, you’ll be left with a fresher space and a clearer mind.

To keep things manageable, we’ll target the three major areas of your space: the desk, closet, and washroom.

The desk or homework table

For most students, this is a perfect place to start, as an organized desk space plays an integral role in having a successful school year.

Recycling old notes and assignments or throwing away those pesky receipts that have been laying around for months is a simple first step. Then, wipe away dust bunnies and eraser bits that seem to never fully disappear.

Finally, as we view the items sitting on top of our desk the most, a good habit is to only place essential items that you use on a daily basis on top of your desk.

Closet

If you’re anything like me, my closet is where I may be categorized as a bit of a hoarder. With old trends coming back into style like night and day, I always seem to find reasons to keep hold of clothing that has been left untouched for years.

For a quick and easy way to instantly revitalize the space, try arranging tops in a colour coordinated manner and rolling up pants to save space. You can also add plastic storage cubbies to organize socks and tuck summer pieces away.

Washroom

To freshen up your washroom, start off by deep cleaning all surfaces. Grime and dust can easily be ignored, so disinfecting the tub, floor, and toilet will make you feel comfortable walking barefoot again around the space.

Try adding sachets of dried lavender around the room. This low maintenance item instantly enhances the scent of your washroom, and lavender can be easily revived with a few drops of essential oil. Finally, clearing out old shampoo bottles and other miscellaneous items that have been sitting half full on the side of the tub for as long as you can remember will not only declutter the area but will create room for new products you’ll feel excited to use.

Through establishing the habit of organizing your space early on in 2020, the organizational task that may have started off as tedious and time-consuming will begin to feel like a part of your daily routine. As well, your mind will also benefit, as being surrounded by a clean and tidy space will help you think more clearly, especially during the most stressful and chaotic times of the year.
