Regent Events: IJM’s Open Mic Night

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Regent chapter.

I don’t really consider myself talented (I’m more gifted than anything), but I know talent when I see it, and it’s roaming all around Regent University.

On Saturday night, about a dozen guys and gals put on their best act or whatever they could pull together on the spot. It was a very comical, moving and exciting night.

Open mic night was hosted by Regent’s chapter of the International Justice Mission (IJM), who sold coffee to raise money. Hosting this event was a great way to raise awareness for international injustices and to recruit those who are eager to stand by the wronged and oppressed.

Recognition goes to Nathaniel Rodbell and Bethanie Workman for opening their schedules to plan and execute this awesome event. Also, the HC chapter at Regent would like to thank them and the IJM chapter for their partnership in the Dressember campaign

Here are some of my favorite acts from open mic night (in no specific order):

There was a proposal for winter ball, which I thought was so cute! A guy named Zach asked Eileen using a poster with a picture of a whale saying, “I was going to do interpretive tap dancing but whale you go to winter ball with me?” Of course, she said yes. They grow up so fast.

Poetry/jokes

What’s open mic night without a little poetry or comedy? Nathaniel shared a beautiful poem that he wrote. The hilarious Sierra Hayes filled in with some jokes and stories that had the crowd hunched over and teary eyed from laughter. There were also moments of “intermission” when there weren’t any performers, so people would come up with a spur of the moment performance that usually ended as dry humor.

Singing

Darvin performed the song “Castle on the Hill” by Ed Sheeran using a loop. Alyssa Jade and Emily were such a dynamic duo! They both sang while Alyssa Jade played the acoustic guitar. I’m not familiar with the song they sang but I can say it was moving. BJ sang “Sweater Weather” by the Neighborhood and Paul accompanied him with the guitar. Wesley and Andrew sang “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol, which was another beautiful duo because it happened in the spur of the moment, and even though Wesley wasn’t sure of all the lyrics, they kept singing, and they had the ability to match pitches.

While I don’t know when the next open mic will take place, I encourage you to attend. It’s a great intermission from homework and studying, a good way to get out and meet people, and free entertainment.
