Stress. One of the most complained about topics in a college student’s life is stress. Whether this stress comes from family matters, troubles at a part-time job, or just the day-to-day stressors of getting assignments turned in on time, stress is a major problem.

Here are three ways to help when stress comes knocking on your door:

  1. Breathe: One of the hardest things to remember to do in college is to take time out of a busy schedule to breathe and allow yourself to unwind. For an hour, try to put school on the back burner and let yourself partake in a hobby you enjoy: Read a book, go on a walk, write a story, sketch, just remember that taking time for yourself is just as important as doing school.
  2. Come up with a plan: Never wait until the last minute to do assignments; you will always end up feeling rushed and unhappy with the quality of your work. Instead, take the time to come up with a plan for each week of when you can get assignments done and still allow yourself to have some well-deserved rest.
  3. Talk about it: One of the hardest things to do in college is to actually talk about how you are doing mentally. When you look around, it may seem that other people have their lives figured out a lot more, but that really is not true. Everyone has struggles they fight through every day, whether those struggles are noticeable or not is the main difference between people who always seem stressed and those who appear perfect.

College is no doubt a stressful time, but it does not have to be a weary experience. Learn to embrace the chaos and dance in the rain. Just remember not to spend too much time dancing when you ought to be working: balance is key.
