Although it may appear as a place purely for fun to people on the outside, college is a huge source of stress and anxiety. The pressure to get good grades, be involved and have a social life can take a huge toll on students. Studying for exams, writing 10-page papers and reading 100 pages in a matter of a few days can be daunting tasks. Throughout these torturous times, it may seem that there is no light at the end of the tunnel, but you will get through it and be proud of doing so.
Stress-relievers and advice on how to deal with the stresses of college seem to always be the same, but the primary key to having a successful semester is making sure to utilize the time you have efficiently and effectively.
Though you may not think you have time to exercise, doing simple stretches or exercises in your room or running to and from the caf are great ways to stay focused and keep your stress to a minimum. Set a goal to accomplish, such as writing five pages of that midterm paper, and then treat yourself to a fun game of soccer or volleyball outside.
It is also important to eat healthy and drink plenty of water to ensure a strong immune system and improve brain function. Salad, whole grains, fruits and water are great choices when you plan to do a lot of homework or studying. If you complete a difficult group project, go get some fro-yo to celebrate every once in a while.
It is just as important to have alone-time as well as it is to socialize. Be sure to listen to some music and put away your cell phone for an hour- you’d be amazed at what some quiet time can do. However, don’t be alone for too long. Have some fun with your roommates, go out to dinner and goof around. Laughing is a huge way to de-stress your mind and your body.
Remember, you are at college to learn so your classes should be your utmost priority. Go to the professor’s office hours if you need extra help, or dedicate more time to studying. If you can’t go out on a weekend, no worries! Stay in, drink some tea, have a little bit of candy and get work done.
No matter how hard it is, have a positive outlook. The more negative you think about the million assignments you have yet to do, the more stressed you will feel. Â If you are too overwhelmed, take a deep breath, go to a yoga class or simply find a reason to laugh. Keep your eye on the prize and you will get through it!
